Satellite digital TV has been broadcast on the Continent for a couple of years now, and it's set to begin here in earnest later this year when the UK's biggest satellite broadcaster, BSkyB, plans to launch a number of subscription digital stations.

Non-satellite (terrestrial) digital TV ­ which will include BBC and ITV stations ­ is due to follow shortly afterwards. And, within a few years, there could be more than 200 terrestrial and satellite digital stations to choose from.

As early as 1999, digital television technology could let you use your TV to surf the internet. This means it won't just be those with computers and modems who can take advantage of shopping over the internet.

Buying goods this way gives you access to all sorts of things that aren't available on the high street. If you are a fan of obscure folk music, for instance, you can find a specialist site. The internet can help you buy out-of-print books, and there are sites that sell unusual coffee and rare malt whisky.
